Event Details

Join us for a unique panel discussion consisting of a structural engineer, detailer and fabricator which recently worked together on a project in which the structural steel shop drawings were reviewed electronically.  The team will discuss how the process worked as well as the benefits and pitfalls that each experienced during the process.  Existing steel detailing programs will also be shown to illustrate to attendees how the process would work.  In addition, a construction lawyer will join the panel to answer any legal issues.

Panel discussion topics include:

•    What is an electronic shop drawing review?
•    What tools are available for conducting electronic reviews?
•    How does an electronic review differ from a traditional review?
•    What are the potential benefits of an electronic review?
•    What are the potential pitfalls of an electronic review?
•    What experiences have people had with true electronic model reviews?
•    What are the legal implications of electronic reviews?
•    How can one be assured that electronic data is not altered after a review?
•    How is data archived?
•    How might BIM influence the prevalence of electronic reviews in the future?

Attendance to this seminar is worth 1.0 New York PDH Credits

Panel Members:

Herb Holz is the President of the Structural Engineers Coalition of Connecticut.  Herb will moderate the discussion.

Peter Griem is the Structural Engineering Department Manager at Hoyle, Tanner & Associates in Portsmouth, NH.  While working at The S/L/A/M Collaborative in Glastonbury, Peter electronically reviewed structural steel models using both Tekla Structures and SDS/2 Global Review Station for projects in Indiana, New York, and Connecticut.

Carl Tavarozzi is Vice President of T & T Structural, Inc., a structural steel detailing firm in Rocky Hill, CT.  Carl is an expert user of SDS/2, and was the detailer for the Capital Preparatory Magnet School in Hartford, CT – the first known project in Connecticut to utilize a model-based electronic review.

Jeff Parnell is the Engineering Manager at Shepard Steel in Hartford, CT.  Shepard Steel was the fabricator for the Capital Preparatory Magnet School, and helped to establish ground rules for critical items that need to be tracked for electronic reviews.

Don Doeg is a construction lawyer for Updike, Kelly & Spellacy, P.C. in Hartford, CT and represents many design professionals for legal issues.  Don will highlight typical legal obligations, recommend best business practices, and identify “uncharted” legal territories that are associated with electronic review.
